and summer residence of the gods, is a mountainous island with
densely wooded foothills towered over by snow covered mount
Pelion
is not just a summer place but also a popular ski resort. The
lower slops are covered with orchards of apple, pear, peach
and citrus groves surrounded by beautiful forests of beech,
oak, chestnut and eucalyptus trees.
Colour
is all around provided by the gardenias that are grown throughout
Pelion. Good walking country along shaded forest paths , past
rushing streams and waterfalls through pretty villages, notably
Tsanfarada famous for it's giant tree should not be missed.
Hire car is a good way to see the island but take care the narrow
roads snake around the mountainsides with spectacular panoramic
views.
There
is a mix of sand and shingle beaches with safe swimming, harbours
to explore plus tavernas and shops. at Kala [Greek for clean
water] there is a fresh water spring bubbling up near the shore.
Pelion
is traditional Greece at it's best relatively undiscoverd and
very beautiful.
