ALGARVE
Albuferia
Located midway along the southcoast, the heart of Albufeira is still a working fishing village as well as being the most popular Algarve resort. The greater area incorporates several adjoining suberbs set among low-lying hills and facing a succession of beautiful beaches. The main square of the old town is surrounded by cobbled streets with fishermen's houses and an antiquated stone tunnel leads to the beach where you will see colourful fishing boats. There are a total of seven beaches ranging from the busy sandy stretches in front of the old town to the more intimate little bays and coves to the east and west. Albufeira and Praia da Oura are the most central beaches and are wide, curved and sandy with good facilities including an abundance of water sports. In the old part of the town there are several churches to visit or you can watch fishermen unloading their catch at Praia dos Barcos. Vist Pau da Bandeira on the eastern side of Albufeira and take in the panoramic view of the whole town. Back in the town centre, criss-crossed with a maze of cobbled streets there are many cafes, bars and restaurants to visit and good shopping including handicrafts and ceramics. Restaurants are plentiful and varied and there is also an extremely wide choice of nightlife. Journey time from Faro approx 30 minutes (35kms)

Carvoeiro
Southwest facing and nestling between high cliffs and a lovely sandy beach dotted with brightly coloured fishing boats. The picturesque, white-washed resort stretches along the coastline encompassing Algar Seco and Centeanes beach. The main beach of Carvoeiro (pronounced Carv-ware-oh), situated near the main square is sandy, rocky on the shoreline and sheltered by cliffs in parts with good facilities. There are three other smaller cove beaches in the area which have steep access and offer more seclusion. Carvoeiro has retained its charm and is still predominantly a fishing village with a bustling, friendly atmosphere and most activity revolving around the beach and the main square. Restaurants are plentiful and offer varied dishes, "Caldeirada"(fish stew) being a delicious speciality. The resort also has numerous bars some offering live entertainment making for a lively night life centred around the main beach. There are general grocery and souvenir shops, and a daily fresh fruit and vegetable market in the resort. There is also a daily market in Lagoa which is a short drive - just under five kilometres away. At the uppermost extremity of the resort are the spectacular Algar Seco rock formations. The resort is also an ideal base for visiting the Moorish capital of Silves and the spas at Caldas. Journey time from Faro approx 50 minutes

Accommodation is mainly in self-catering villas and apartments, the 5 star Hotel Quinta do Lago is the only hotel in the resort and is ideally situated for the beach. The beach is reached by a wooden foot-bridge crossing the Estuary. Situated amidst the sand-dunes overlooking the Estuary is a beach-bar/restaurant which serves fantastic freshly caught fish and seafood. The shopping centre in the middle of the resort sells clothes and souvenirs, complexes and hotels also have their own shops.
